Pans Labyrinth: pale man scene

Pans Labyrinth is a Spanish movie set in 1944 5 years after the Spanish civil war, the movie follows a young girl who meets a faun in the forest and is told she is a princess from an underground kingdom and she must undergo 3 tasks to return to the kingdom. One of these tasks is to steal a golden dagger from the pale mans banquet and escape before the hourglass is complete.

scene
the scene begins with Ofelia opening the book with the tasks provided by the faun, we are given an over the shoulder shot of the book as the pale man is shown, in the position of a womb this could be foreshadowing the death of Carman and the third trial where the blood of the innocent must be given for the gates of the other world to be open, this also shows the pale man towering over a young girl this accomplishes the same as a high camera angle, showing weakness and venerability in the victim. After this the camera follows Ofelia's hand as it draws the chalk door to get into the labyrinth this builds suspense over weather the chalk will work. we are then given a zoom out and following shots of the labyrinth hallway this gives the impression of disbelief and mystery as Ofelia walks slowly through the hallway which the walls are painted faintly in red this is a connotation to the blood of the children that the pale man has eaten. As Ofelia entered the pale mans lair there is an establishing shot of the pale man sat at the end of a long table, laid out with a banquet of large fruits and beautiful meat. This room is meant to attract the audience and the characters into entering, as well as this while Ofelia walks toward the pale man and the camera follows her, panning across the table showing the food one of the items is broken showing the tracks of one of the pale mans old victims who he killed because they failed the task.
Then the Pale Man is shown sitting on a thrown at the end of the table motionless, this installs fear and adds a suspenseful atmosphere to the scene as the audience knows the treat of this monster but we do not know how it will act or strike at her.
